On Thursday 17 October 2024 : 9:30 to 11:00 (CET) the French Society of Immunology (SFI) will host a webinar entitled : Neutrophil heterogeneity : how functional is it ? Chaired by VéroniqueWitko-Sarsat (Paris) and Aude Remot (Tours).
In the ever-evolving field of immunology, understanding neutrophil diversity is crucial for advancing therapeutic strategies. Over the past decade, Lai Guan Ng (Shanghai, China) has led groundbreaking research on neutrophil heterogeneity, identifying different « flavours » of neutrophils, from immature cells in the bone marrow to functionally distinct subsets involved in infection, injury, autoimmunity, and tumors (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC11087151/).
Recently, Nathalie Winter and Christophe Paget (Tours, France) identified a new subset of neutrophils expressing Programmed Death-Ligand 1 (PD-L1), which are distinct from conventional neutrophils. In tuberculosis and severe respiratory infections, these PD-L1+ neutrophils play a regulatory role in the lungs, offering promising targets for future immune therapies (PMID: 38803236; https://doi.org/10.1101/2023.11.23.568456).
