Immune responses lie at the heart of almost every aspect of human health, including host responses to infection, autoimmunity, cancer, metabolism and aging. While adaptive immune responses by B and T lymphocytes are initiated in lymphoid organs, they frequently target compartmentalized barrier tissues such as the lung, gut and urogenital mucosa. Although there is a growing appreciation for the importance of barrier lymphocytes in tissue remodeling and defense, the mechanistic underpinnings of their development, maintenance and potential for manipulation are poorly defined. Moreover, there is clear evidence that tissue lymphocytes play by different rules compared to conventional lymphocytes. The goal of this meeting is to bring together established experts, emerging leaders and early career trainees to highlight and disseminate the most recent advances in this field. Our aim is to foster a creative and collaborative debate that will lead to new insights and models about the biology of tissue lymphocytes and how they can be targeted to prevent and treat human disease.
